Carbon fibre fabric and carbon rovings are impregnated with pitch or resins and are then laminated into sheets or wound into cylinders. Custom shapes can also be fabricated. These are then cured and carbonized. CFRC materials for high temperature applications are usually processed at a temperature of 2000ºC before machining and graphitized at approximately 2900ºC. The physical properties of CFRC can be varied as required by the choice of type, content and orientation of the fibres, the lamination process, the secondary compression, and the baking and graphitizing temperatures.
This carbon composite, together with the light, high strength and rigid carbon fibres has all the virtues of graphite but is much less dense and has considerably higher strength and rigidity.
